Statistics only - Is Roger Clemens in the top 5 pitchers of all time?

Statistics only - Is Roger Clemens in the top 5 pitchers of all time?
no.Steroids.
Reply:It's sort of unfair to compare pitchers across generations.. but statistically.. Roger Clemens is NOT in the top 5 pitchers of all-time.

In the last 50 years? Yes.. although NOT statistically.

Wins is a useless statistic in determing the value of a pitcher. If you disagree.. take a look at the 1910 season for Ed Walsh.. in which Ed was 18-20 with a 1.27 ERA. If you'd like a more recent season and one which involves the pitcher in question.. look at the 1990 Cy Young award and try and convince yourself Bob Welch had more dominating season than Roger Clemens.
Reply:I don't know many other pitchers that worked harder than Roger Clemens.

1986 AL MVP

7 Cy Young Awards (1986, 1987, 1991, 1988, 2001, 2004)

1986 All-Star Game MVP

1997 %26amp; 1998 Triple Crown winner

7 times lead the league in ERA.

4 times lead the league in Wins

5 times lead the league in Strikeouts

Went to the World Series six times and won two World Series titles.

8th in Career Wins (354)

2nd in Career Strikouts (4672)

Twice struck out 20 batters in a single 9-inning game.

These accolades are hard to match by any pitcher. Yes, he'll go down as one of the 5 best pitchers of all time.
Reply:there has been three pitchers since 1911 with 350 wins and he is one of them,,, spahn and maddux are the other two.. stats yes but big game gonads no.... the turn of the century pitchers with 400 wins or more had many more chances to win games than todays pitchers.. they didnt have to pitch 5 innings to qualify for a win either..some pitched two games in the same day..many many times.. what do you think that nolan ryan would of done against those broomsticks and handlebar moustaches?? pedro? johnson? koufax? gibson?
Reply:If you throw out all the steroid accusations and personal problems and look at just the numbers - and really aren't the numbers what baseball is about - then yes he's definitely in the top 5 and without a doubt the best pitcher still alive today.
Reply:He has to be really but he also played from some good teams. Nolan Ryan was better, but just too bad he played for bad teams. He even struck out 383 in one season and had seven career no hitters. He also was reaching the high 90s and 100 even at 46 years old. His last no hitter he was like 45 or 46. amazing guy.
Reply:Modern era pitchers who were (are) better:

1) Sandy Koufax

2) Bob Gibson

3) Tom Seaver

4) Warren Spahn

5) Greg Maddux

So no, Clemens is not a top pitcher.
Reply:Yes. Obviously. 8th in wins, but the other 7 come from an era where it wasn't so much of a rotation-like pitcher's game. 2nd in strikeouts says something. Yes. He is, based on stats.
Reply:Yeah. Roidger Clemens is one of the best ever.

He will join Barroid in the HOF soon enough. I am happy for both of them.
Reply:Yes he is in the top five but yet not as good a Noal Ryan but only if he could of keep play he would have been the best of all time
Reply:Roger Roger

he's in
Reply:No.

He's one of the top three.

Okay, technically Yes, but the spec can be tightened a bit.
Reply:yes
Reply:With or without the steriods???
Reply:I think it would be hard not to have him there. If not Top 5, definitely Top 10.
Reply:yes but hes jacked on roids
