Where can I find out official government statistics?

I'm doing some research as part of a psychology dissertation for university into why some women dress fashoinably and others do not. I need to find out what the value of the clothing and apparal industry is and what percentage of this is women andwhat is men. But i need oficial statistics, how can I find this!!!!

Where can I find out official government statistics?
Office of National Statistics website?
Reply:I doubt any government cares enough about this to keep stats. How about looking into what women spend annually on clothing and accessories? Perhaps you can extrapolate from that.
Reply:Financial Times
Reply:Answers good so far... also you can demand various types of information... write to the department you want the info from... tell them you want the info, under the Freedom of Information Act. They are obliged to give you anything that would fall within this act. Address your letter to the Information Officer.
Reply:If you are looking for US Government statistics, it is doubtful that they will have the information you are looking for. The Department of Commerce may keep some statisitics on how much is spent on clothing and apparal, but they probably do not gather the information based on gender.

It sounds like what you are really looking for is a market research report. These reports provide detail information on different industries. If you have access at your university to various business information databases or if your library has a good business research section, you may be able to get this information for free. Otherwise, a professional report can be rather pricy.
Reply:I think that at one time you could get this info from the BSO Newport Gwent.

But I think that the government may have since shut down the Business Statistics Office.

It was regulation that all companies submitted statistics of their sales to this office.

Blair didn't want statistics kept because of his numerous share dealings in companies such as Kingspan where Building regulations were changed to suit that business to increase the share value
Reply:hi there.

if you live in the uk then you want to look at the trends

this website http://www.statistics.gov.uk/ gives you statistics on all sorts...just have a browse!

thats the officail statistics site and is recognised by every lecturer and is the data base for any offical statistic ever recorded.

any other sites cannot be fully trusted...but this is a government site...so whether or not you believe what it says its the most reliable source your going to get

hope that helps and good luck!
Reply:I'm not sure the government keeps those statistics... maybe they do... but I am not familiar with that...

you may have better luck with some sort of fashion consumer group... if such thing exists... which one probably does...
Reply:in the statistics office.
