What are the statistics on people who have one the lottery and then loose it all?

How many people loose everything once they won? What are the percentage of people who loose it all in the first 2 years?

What are the statistics on people who have one the lottery and then loose it all?
Nearly one-third of lottery winners become bankrupt.

“The CFP Board made an offer to the National Association of State and Provincial Lotteries to provide the organization's members with information to distribute to winners. The Investment News article highlighted the lack of financial guidance many winners receive from state lottery agencies; estimates show that nearly one-third of lottery winners become bankrupt.”

What are the statistics of which sells more, a single family house, or a town house.?

I've seen really nice town houses going for about $200,000, but I'm afraid to buy them cause I fear that we will have a hard time selling in the future when it's time to move on. Any suggestions as to what websites to look at or any good answers?

What are the statistics of which sells more, a single family house, or a town house.?
Most people prefer the single family detached ones. However if they can't afford that they start looking at town houses.

I have no idea where you live but I think you need to look at local sites for your area. Try ZIPREALTY which is a national chain that does local area websites.
Reply:Usually the single family dwelling is the best investment.

What are the statistics on alchohol related crime, in reference to weed related crime?

And why is it illegal to smoke weed, but not to drink alchohol.

What are the statistics on alchohol related crime, in reference to weed related crime?
Alcohol plays a huge part in crime. Domestic Violence, Assaults and Battery, DUI of course, and just plain drunk if public.

Weed, no, not to much. A few DUI's but most pot heads just lay there and try to decide what to do if they got up.

The marijuana laws tend to be arcane. One of the major forces to make it a Federal Crime was with the support of the alcohol lobby. In California, simple possession is punishable by a $100 fine. That's it.

Remember, in some counties around the country it is still illegal to drink. If you remember the Andy Griffith Show, the county he was sheriff was a dry county.
Reply:I seriously doubt alcohol plays a part in most crime. Your hardened criminals want to be thinking clearly, and they know alcohol impairs judgement.

As far as weed, the same principle applies, with an exception, many crimes are committed by people wanting to get money to buy drugs. This would figure to be a very large percentage.

The simple answer to why weed is illegal: the lawmakers decide that. Alcohol was actually illegal during prohibition, but the public was able to convice lawmakers to change that. The public has not had the same success with weed.
Reply:Economics!
Reply:Weekend crimes are 10 times higher than weekdays due to alcohol OR drugs.

Weed's illegal, because the courts can't prove an accident or death was caused by someone under the influence of it, but they can if alcohol's involved.

Christmas tree fire statistics versus other home fire causes?

In our building they prohibited natural trees this year as it is a fire hasard. I want to build the case for keeping them as my children are heart broken and I believe (without supporting data) that there are many other problems to focus on besides trees (especially if the tree is watered properly). Any links, articles, statistics would be appreciated.

Finally - is there any difference between real and artificial trees when it comes to flamability... I would think that the plastics in the artificial trees would be flamable also.

Christmas tree fire statistics versus other home fire causes?
That is so heartbreaking. How do your landlords sleep at night. That would seriously piss me off.

This site may help:

http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/factsheets/fire...

I briefly skimmed it. I think if your building prohibited real trees, you should invest in a fake one. Lowe's had them on sale right now for $79. And no, they do not cause fires.. you can put them up anytime and take them down anytime and you won't have to worry about them getting fried. I hope your children don't have to go without a tree, best wishes and happy holidays.
Reply:I don't have the statistics on fires but do inow that many building codes prohibit cut live trees in areas of public assembly. Your Landlord therefore is on solid ground.

I prefer my artifical tree - the investment lasts for many years - it is non alergenic (fresh trees often have unseen but breathed molds in the dying branches) and I know that it is one less tree being cut down this year.
Reply:well i say that yes they both are flamable and that if real trees arent alound then neither should that artificial go to the buliding ower and tell him that but do not be mean about it.

What website will give me a whole lot of statistics and info on how the moon causes earthquakes on earth>?

pls pls help, If u have any statistics of ur own pls post them too.

What website will give me a whole lot of statistics and info on how the moon causes earthquakes on earth%26gt;?
It might , but it would be difficult to prove. The moon is in orbit and is always at about the same distance. Yes it varies but statistically the differences in distances aren't that significant. In the distant past, when the moon was MUCH closer, there were significant land tides. Today the forces are much smaller, but they could provide a trigger effect. Here is a brief ariticle I found on a magazine database:

itle:

Some temblors probably were triggered by tides. By: Perkins, Sid, Science News, 00368423, 12/4/2004, Vol. 166, Issue 23

Some temblors probably were triggered by tides

Section: OF NOTE

EARTH SCIENCE

Detailed analyses of past large earthquakes suggest that some of the temblors may have been triggered by strong tides in Earth's crust and its oceans.

Such tides, induced by the gravitational attraction of the sun and moon, cause variations in the stress inside rocks and can significantly affect the pressure that holds together the two sides of a fault zone. An Earth-crust tide can increase or decrease this pressure by 500 kilograms per square meter, and an ocean tide can have 10 times that effect by sloshing into or away from a shoreline adjacent to an inland fault, says John E. Vidale of the University of California, Los Angeles.

To see whether tide-induced stress variations might be triggering earthquakes, Vidale and his colleagues looked for effects of tides, if any, during more than 2,000 large earthquakes that occurred in the last quarter-century on fault zones at rock depths of less than 40 kilometers, where such forces can have significant effects.

If tide-induced stress variations had no influence on earthquakes, half of the temblors would occur when the pressure holding together the two sides of a fault is below average and half would occur when the pressure is above average, says Vidale. However, the researchers' analysis showed a different pattern.

Of the 19 earthquakes that happened when the stress along a fault at a temblor's epicenter either increased or decreased by more than 2,000 kg/m2, 14-or 74 percent-occurred when the pressure holding together the fault was lower than average.

Small variations in stress didn't produce such lopsided statistics, Vidale and his colleagues report in the Nov. 12 Science. These patterns suggest that tidal stress can trigger some earthquakes, says Vidale.

Since the Federal government does not collect a sales tax per se, you will have to go to the individual states' websites to get that information. Same with property taxes. There are also a couple of interesting places to visit listed below. The first one compiles data on Americans' total Federal and State tax burden.

What do you think about the decline in statistics by Albert Pujols?

Cardinals fans and those that follow Albert Pujols what do you think has caused his drop in offensive numbers? He is down in HR, RBI, Runs, and his AVE is slightly lower. I hope this is just a phase and he will bounce back soon and maybe next season he will again have his usually high numbers. He has played every game and I can only remember one game he didn't get to bat (he came in late for defense). It does look as though he will have more walks this year than any other year but we are talking about 12-15 more than previous totals. Anybody have any ideas as to what is going on with Pujols?

What do you think about the decline in statistics by Albert Pujols?
I expected a decline from the very start. He's a great hitter, but it helps to be in good lineup. Long gone are Larry Walker, Reggie Sanders and Edmond's ability to put up numbers.

The offense has been getting weaker and weaker over the last few years and finally it's come to the point were it's gets too difficult for one player to carry the load. Last year Pujols was the only player on the team with over 25 Home Run and the only player with 100+ RBI's.

Here's the Cardinals numbers in the first half over the last few years. You can see easily see the decline.

2004 - 108 HR, 455 Runs, .276 AVG

2005 - 97 HR, 447 Runs, .271 AVG

2006 - 87 HR, 440 Runs, .279 AVG

2007 - 70 HR, 368 Runs, .267 AVG
Reply:i just think he's in a bad funk and he'll get out of it. i'm a brewers fan, but i still like albert pujols a little bit b/c he's a good player and i think he did it steroid-free
Reply:All players have slumps and not so good years that they would like to forget about. But next year hes going be to a All Star and MVP!
Reply:I still think Albert Pujols is a top player. His first-half numbers are not Pujolsesque but are still solid. You have to remember no one - not even Ted Williams - started their career with as many awesome seasons as Pujols.

If this is an off year, you still have to take it.
Reply:He has more walks because pitchers know nobody in front of him or behind him in the lineup can hurt them.

His average is "down" for the same reason.

Playing on such a bad luck team like the Cardinals this year has gotten to everybody who was on the squad as of last season. Know why Franklin and Wellemeyer and Percival and Ludwick are doing so well? Because they didn't know what it was like to WIN with this team! Their expectations are as low as the bar goes. They're here to prove themselves and maybe win along the way. If Rolen was the old Rolen, then Pujols would have normal numbers. It's that simple. But not even little Duncan provides enough of a threat to keep pitchers honest when facing Pujols. It may not seem like it, but Albert has had cushy protection his whole career here. Edmonds and Rolen helped immensely, but now Pujols is facing a true challenge, which is carrying a broken down team. He's not pulling an A-Rod, but then again, who can? I think for as poorly as the Cardinals have played this season, Albert's numbers might be a little higher than they should be. Provided that there is one competant bat in front of or behind Pujols, he should resume his history making pace.
Reply:pujols will be fine. his numbers are still great they are down a little because no one else on the cardinals can hit. duncan is all right he is the only one. also don't forget he had a terrible april if you take away that month his numers are better
Reply:Sorry, but I'm not that much into baseball.
Reply:Maybe your expectations are a bit high. Pujols will end the season with 35 home runs, 125 each of rbi %26amp; runs, and still hit over .300. How many guys can do that and have people thinking they are playing bad?
Reply:I know the true source of Pujols power.. HDTV has the answer. I've noticed that every time he's hit a HR, or had a great day at the plate he's had a giant herpe on his upper lip.. Not many people have picked this up.. But if you have an HDTV you can see for yourself.. Just watch the next time he's on TV, if he's hit a homer, I'm sure his little friend will be there.

Anybody know where I can find the standard deviations for baseball statistics for the 2005 season?

This is for a statistics project. We're comparing individual players' statistics on the Giants, Mets, Yankees, A's, Marlins, and Dodgers for the 2005 season. Specifically, how their salary correlates with two primary statistics (Batting Average and # of Wins). Where can we find the MEAN and Standard Deviation of these statistics within the major league for the 2005 season so we can calculate P-values and Z-scores/T-scores?

Should the NFL add two statistics that they currently ignore?

So many people look at the statistics and wonder why the Seattle Seahawks are where they are. They are ignoring two telling statistics . . . points allowed by the offense . . . and . . . points made by the defense.

It is a dimension of the game no one analyzes or even keeps, but it certainly makes a difference.

Should the NFL add two statistics that they currently ignore?
Yes, those statistics would be great, but when an interception or fumble is run back for a touchdown, those yards should be deducted from the offensive yards gained by the team throwing the interception or fumbling the ball, just like a sack.
Reply:the points scored by a defense is a stat. There is a section for that. but points giving up by an offense isnt kept which is pretty interesting. I think it should be called PSDT. points scored directly off a turnover.
Reply:If the Defense SCORES a TD, doesn't that mean the other offense ALLOWED the TD? So yeah I mean it is kept, just not by the NFL. Keep your own spreadsheet. Anyway I agree it would be interesting to see it written out so people could see it though.
Reply:I think they do keep track of defensive TDs. Points allowed by an offense would be interesting to see.

In statistics- What is the difference between the critical and observed value?

I am doing an unrelated t test for my psychology coursework and am confused as to what the difference is, is my result of the test the crit or obs value?

In statistics- What is the difference between the critical and observed value?
Critical value is the value that would have been obtained if chance alone contributed to the outcome at the chosen level of significance. Observed value is the value you obtain from the test statistic to be compared with the critical value.
Reply:the critical value is used in fixed level hypothesis testing. When you are, for example, using a z-test for the mean, at the 5% level, then the critical values are z = -1.96 and z = 1.96.

the observed value, the values found from the data, is translated into z-scores.

if the absolute value of the observed z-score is greater than 1.96, i.e., greater than the crical value, then you reject the null hypothesis.

Think of it this way. The critical value is the zscore(s) such that it the maximum distance from the mean you will accept for random error under the assumption the null hypothesis is true. If the observed value is further way from the null mean than the critical value then you have observed something very unlikely under the assumption that the null is true and you reject the null.

I personally find the fixed hypothesis testing levels to be difficult to teach to my students and even more pointless when witting a paper. I, and many others, prefer to use p-values and report them because the information is not as limited.

Consider the hypothesis as a trial against the null hypothesis. the data is evidence against the mean. you assume the mean is true and try to prove that it is not true. After finding the test statistic and p-value, if the p-value is less than or equal to the significance level of the test we reject the null and conclude the alternate hypothesis is true. If the p-value is greater than the significance level then we fail to reject the null hypothesis and conclude it is plausible. Note that we cannot conclude the null hypothesis is true, just that it is plausible.

If the question statement asks you to determine if there is a difference between the statistic and a value, then you have a two tail test, the null hypothesis, for example, would be μ = d vs the alternate hypothesis μ ≠ d

if the question ask to test for an inequality you make sure that your results will be worth while. for example. say you have a steel bar that will be used in a construction project. if the bar can support a load of 100,000 psi then you'll use the bar, if it cannot then you will not use the bar.

if the null was μ ≥ 100,000 vs the alternate μ %26lt; 100,000 then will will have a meaningless test. in this case if you reject the null hypothesis you will conclude that the alternate hypothesis is true and the mean load the bar can support is less than 100,000 psi and you will not be able to use the bar. However, if you fail to reject the null then you will conclude it is plausible the mean is greater than or equal to 100,000. You cannot ever conclude that the null is true. as a result you should not use the bar because you do not have proof that the mean strength is high enough.

if the null was μ ≤ 100,000 vs. the alternate μ %26gt; 100,000 and you reject the null then you conclude the alternate is true and the bar is strong enough; if you fail to reject it is plausible the bar is not strong enough, so you don't use it. in this case you have a meaningful result.

Any time you are defining the hypothesis test you need to consider whether or not the results will be meaningful.
Reply:critical value is the one you look up from the table

obs value is the value you want to test (test value). You want to see where obs values falls. If obs fails inside the reject region, you reject null

How relible are standard sources of descriptive statistics?

In other words, how reliable are the numbers in publications like the "U.S. Statistical Abstract"? Is it possible that some of them are carefully compiled and hence largely reliable while others are very carelessly collected to the point of being garbage? Is there really any way we can reliably tell the difference?

And do we use such traditionally "reliable" sources in the social sciences only because they are the only ones we have available? In other words, are we forced to use them because we are, quite simply, stuck with them?

And if we compile new data bases of statistical information, do these same possible problems of collection make them as unreliable as previously available collections?

To summarize all this in a single question, do we blindly use all these resources in the same traditional but unreliable ways largely because that is all we know how to do?

Harleigh Kyson Jr.

How relible are standard sources of descriptive statistics?
Is there are way we can reliably tell the difference between the carefully collected and garbage? Probably not, but we can look at who collected (and/or funded the collection of) the data. Government agencies are (hopefully) going to be very reliable, while those with a specific agenda may well be less reliable because of that agenda.

We use them because to a degree we are stuck with them yes, but that is because we can not necessarily change what we have. For example crime statistics, if you look at reported crimes, we can not really get more accurate results unless people actually report the crimes, so we are limited that way.

So do we blindly use these resources? Certainly not, as we are (or should try to be) aware of their limitations, but we can not change them.

IN STATISTICS, What's the difference between POPULATION and SAMPLE?

For example, in my textbook there are formulas like POPULATION Coeficient of Variation and SAMPLE coeficient variation. Also Standarized POPULATION data and Standarized SAMPLE data. I don't know when should i use the formulas for population or for Sample!

Help Please!

IN STATISTICS, What's the difference between POPULATION and SAMPLE?
These are exactly what they say they are:

Population is the entire objects or specimens you are concerned with.

Sample or random sample is just that a random sample of the population.

an example of a populations could be all males between the ages of 24-30. an example of a sample would be a handful of those males. Note that a sample is always taken from a certain population and is always smaller in number.
Reply:I need more time to think about this question.
Reply:have a look here:

http://www.stats.gla.ac.uk/steps/glossar...

in short - as already said, population is the whole, sample is a part of the population (if well chosen it has the same characteristics as the population) - that's how e.g. market research works - you can't ask millions of consumers if you want to know how a new product would be liked so you chose a sample that has the same characteristics as the target group for which you make a product and ask only a few hundred people.
Reply:In most studies, it is difficult to obtain information from the entire population. We rely on samples to make estimates or inferences related to the population.

Like if you are cooking a pot of soup(population), and you take a spoon full(sample) to see how it tastes. So although you didn't eat the entire pot of soup, you have a general idea of how it tastes.
Reply:population means the population of the whole area

sample means a sample of people taken out of the population to be tested or studied.

What site can I enter personal statistics to find the best fitness equipment for me?

I'm 6'8" and 300lbs, trying to find info on fitness equipment for people my size. Specifically looking for recumbent bikes anbd elipitical machines.

What site can I enter personal statistics to find the best fitness equipment for me?
Hi there

I have worked in fitness equipment retail for 8 years now and have a Bachelor of Physical Education. To answer your question, it does not matter which peice of equipment you use as long as you're comfortable on it as all cardio equipment is mean't for weight loss or cardiovascular excercise. Ellipticals are good because they are low to no impact while still providing weight bearing activity to keep the bones strong. Problem with ellipticals is that you need to be able to put forth $2500 or more to get one that feels good, is biomechanically correct and can handle your "bigger" stature as you'll want something well built. Recumbent bikes are much cheaper, will provide you with cardio/weight loss excercise and are easy to use. Ellipticals are more efficient than the bikes because you use your entire body meaning more calories expended over a shorter period of time. People also tend to get bored on the bikes. My suggestion is to go to a gym and try them both before you buy. Last thing you want is to buy something that you don't like. As for a website, I am unsure of that. Try some of the fitness equipment manufacturing sites such as many times they will have helpful hints on buying the equipment. www.precor.com, www.iamstrong.ca (this one is more towards health and lifestyle and has testiomonials).

Hope this helps!
Reply:How about health.com i think* that's a website
Reply:Take a look at www.vectorfitness.com . They might be able to custom make fitness equipment for you.

Anything credible that could make a compelling arguement in favor of pro-choice would be highly appreciatied. Facts with emotional appeal would also work, like relating illegality of abortion to poverty, overpopulation, or neglect.

Does somebody know of any abortion or poverty statistics to argue in favor of the pro-choice opinion?
Sorry I don't have sources, but one thing you'd want to find would be the deaths and other damage due to illegal abortions, before Roe v Wade. They are both relevant and compelling.

Also, civilized societies have way fewer abortions than we do, since they don't hate and fear sexuality, but are rational about teaching methods of preventing unwanted pregnancy, and making contraception available. So look for international stats on number of abortions per thousand women.

The heart of the argument for legalized abortion isn't statistical in nature. It's based on the idea that I am the owner of my body, not the government, and that individuals have the right to make their own life-decisions for themselves.

The "Give the Zygote the Vote" crowd (a minority of Americans, BTW) feel that they have the right to make other people's personal decisions for them.
Reply:...I don't think he was asking for personal opinions on the matter, particularly for the other side. So...not very helpful, guys.

I don't know how helpful this will be, but I did find this site with a lot of statistics about abortion and reasons for doing so and such:

http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/fb_induce...
Reply:The problem with abortion is it is used to fix problems that arise out of behavior problems. People who behave irresponsibly sexually get pregnant and then want to get rid of the problem. Read this question and see what is wrong with this situation. This to me is why abortion needs to be banned. People who are not mature enough to have children should not be having sex. This is a big problem in society.

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

This may not help you, but at least I can offer the counterargument.
Reply:Abortion is murder and there is no excuse for it. There are always people willing to adopt children from those unable or unwilling to face their responsibilities.
Reply:I don't mean to be rude (forgive me if I offend you), but the reason why you don't find any "facts" or "statistics" in favour of abortion is very simple: there aren't any. All the statistics show abortion to be the horrible crime that it is. It is not without reason that abortion has been called "The Second Holocaust". ...and many more people died than in the first one.

Instead of doing a "pro-choice" paper, I would suggest that you do a paper that objectively looks at the facts and statistics of abortion.

I hope this helps, and good luck with your paper.
Reply:Check out the book "Freakonomics" by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner. They point out that the crime rate dropped in the relevant years in the early 1990s, just as the first cohort of children born after Roe v. Wade was hitting its late teen years (14 to 17). These are the years during which young men enter their criminal prime. At this juncture, the rate of crime began to fall. They speculate that the lower amount of crime was due to the lower amount of unwanted children.
Reply:the pro choice people don't spend as much time obsessing about it, thats why you find less information.

you will get your answers there.

there is no credible excuse for killing a kid.

Where can I find studies and statistics on sleeping with your baby?

I have let my nine week old sleep with us since he was born. I have heard conflicting information regarding safety. Everything from "it's dangerous" to it "reduces the risk of SIDS". I would like to find good information from reputable sources on this issue.

Where can I find studies and statistics on sleeping with your baby?
Here are some links below for you. As long as you follow safe co-sleeping guidelines, co-sleeping is a wonderful idea!

Be sure to check out the first link from the Mother-Baby Sleep Laboratory.

EDITED TO ADD:

turtlesducky - I think you are confusing smothering and sids. They are two completely different things.
Reply:I have found all my information at Parenting.com and Babycenter.com.You wouldnt believe the helpful info on EVERYTHING you could imagine.I myself have always been scared to sleep with my babies, and then just kept making them sleep in their bed,Ive not even had my kids ask to sleep with me hardly at all,I guess because Ive always put them in their bed.But I did see a situation on the news a while back where a daddy put his baby in bed with him,and just his arm was slightly over the babys face and he suffocated, another where a breast feeding mom had her baby in bed feeding her and her breast suffocated her. These are just 2 situations that I have seen on the news in the past year.I think I would rather cuddle him for a couple hours before bedtime and hold him until he fell asleep to be on the safe side,I was just always too scared, even though theres nothing more precious than holding your baby all night,Id just rather be safe than sorry! I hope the websites helped, they are awesome from experts.God bless and congragulations on being a mom, theres no better gift!
Reply:I suggest the book "No cry sleep solution" I went through the same thing you are going through and this book helped me the most. I ended up pulling my baby in her crib close to the bed so that she was right next to me and I could hold her little hand to let her know I was there. It helped me sleep through the night and it helped her too. I was no longer worried. This book is geared towards co-sleeping but it does represent the other options. I think in the end you, the mother of your baby, will know what is best for your situation. Good Luck to you and your little one!
Reply:you should talk to your babys doctor first of all there are studies out there that say the number one cause of sids is sleeping witht the parents babies dont need to be around blankets pillows or anything of the sort they are still way to young to know if something gets in their face you should talk to your doctor about your feelings and good luck
Reply:You are just being a over paranoid new mother. Put you kid in it's own bed where it belongs. What are you going to do breast feed til he's six?
Reply:Well I wouldn't let the baby sleep with you . The best way is to put a crib in the room with you and let the baby sleep there. For one thing when it gets older it will want to sleep with you and not sleep in its own bed but that up to you.
Reply:I understand your need to find the facts, I felt the same way, but in the end my little guy stayed with me in my bed and we loved it!

www.attachmentparenting.org - do a search on co-sleeping

You trust your momma insticnts! You are the best mom for your baby and you will do what is right!
Reply:parenting.com is a good place. However I breastfed my children and found it alot easier to let them sleep in the bed with us. It caused alot less stress for the middle of the night feedings.

Where can I find the latest statistics on the prices of consumer electronics?

I need to find a website that graphs the prices of consumer electronics and shows the trend, any ideas?

Where can I find the latest statistics on the prices of consumer electronics?
The only thing I can think of would research the CPI sites.

CPI is Consumer Price Index, and lists avereage price specific consumes pay for basket of goods, but you may be able to narrow down data to consumer electronics.

Another tool would be looking up NPD Consumer Electronics Price Watch site. The links below may help you, good luck..

What are the most important traffic statistics of a website?

In looking at my report of my website's traffic, I wonder what is most important and telling? The report includes Traffic stats such as sessions, pageviews, hits, then details on Visitors such as by day, unique, loyalty. And there is also reports on pages %26amp; files, navigation, referrals, etc. What should I focus on in this lengthy summary report?

What are the most important traffic statistics of a website?
All metrics are important -- what matters is what you do with those metrics.

Take for example pageviews: this is a crucial metrics especially if you are selling advertising space on your site. The more pageviews you get, the higher the chances of earning more from advertising. The question now is: how do you increase pageviews per visit?

As to the pages viewed by the users. If you have an information site, then this metric could tell you that this is the topic that interests your users. If you have an ecommerce site, your next question is: how are the top pages converting and turning to sales?

It's not just a matter of looking at a single metric. It is looking at the combination of metrics, even all the ratios -- and then trying to understand the behavior of your users in order to improve your site performance
Reply:They're all important. From an advertising perspective, unique visitors and page views are probably the most important. But all of the other stats are important to help you understand your site users, and potential opportunities/improvements.
Reply:i think referrals are important because it shows you the source of your traffic.

How do I find out the statistics and which cosmetology school is better?

I am trying to find out which cosmetology school is better. The Paul Mitchell School or the Aveda Institute. How do I know which school will be better for a lucrative career?

How do I find out the statistics and which cosmetology school is better?
Doesn't really matter. It depends on what you yourself can do, not what you duplicate. You can read books on styles, cuts and coloring later. The important things initially are that you pay the least amount possible for the basic training and study hard to pass your test. After that you can specialize.

After passing the state board, some states you can just go and apply and then the shop owner trains you to what their shop is famous for. Or in some states you have to work under a cosmetology manager for a year before you can get your cosmetologist managing license. Then there are criteria you need to meet for renewing your license.

If you are dead set on either school, why not go there, talk with the owner and they will show you around and you can spend a little time seeing what their school does/teaches.
Reply:Get references of graduates from both schools and check them out.

Also, ask your current salon which they school they prefer to hire from.

Where can you find the statistics on a police officers record concerning arrests on a certain crime?

Where can you find the statistics on a police officers record concerning arrests on a certain crime?
http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/ucr.htm

It is important to remember when reviewing this information that there is no uniform for reporting crimes, each dept has their own guidelines. In addition, not all depts report every crime. Therefore, the statistics are not concrete, but only an estimate.

Hope this helps.
Reply:see the ACLU website. i do not know about wandering specifcally but do know that in general blacks are stopped and ticketed more often than whites. I think 50 percent of prison population is black , 25 white and 25 hispanic ?
Reply:although stereotyping is not good guidelines to follow, statisitics are not kept or calculated.

most citizens are glad that all thugs, regardless of race are investigated as to their purpose.

rule of thumb: students, working persons, are usually in bed by 10pm. most "night creepers" are up to no good. they keep pawnshops in business.
Reply:let me guess, you think the officer was racial profiling.

first, not all police officers are racist, matter of fact, 99 percent are not, but they are professional (most of them) and I hope your not getting that confused with racisim...

as far as accuratwe statistics, if you feel you are being targeted, contact the officers supervisor, if that does not help, contact the supervisor's supervisor....if in the end you dont get the answer you want, then the answer you want is not the answer your ever going to get, and you probably just "think" your being targeted, when your not!
Reply:it will take a court order to obtain a officers personell record

What are the most important statistics to look at when buying stocks?

on Yahoo! finance there are a number of stats listed for every company. what are the important ones to look at when buying stocks?

What are the most important statistics to look at when buying stocks?
history is history, but what else do you have to project future? I myself depend so much on historical data in analyzing stocks. as long as its fundamental values remain intact, the data can be representative.

1-As much as possible, look for it annual report. its importance can be explained here,

http://www.stock-investment-made-easy.co...

2-then only extract relevant data for further analysis:

i) - Liquidity Ratio - How much liquid asset that the company have.

http://www.stock-investment-made-easy.co...

ii) - Efficiency Ratio - An overview how its sales perform.

http://www.stock-investment-made-easy.co...

iii)- Gearing Ratio - Its susceptibility to get caught in heavy debt in case of economic crisis.

http://www.stock-investment-made-easy.co...

iv) - Profitability Ratio - How lucrative their product is.

http://www.stock-investment-made-easy.co...

Happy Investing!
Reply:Most ratios are historical values, and the future may be different. But of the Yahoo statistics probably the valuation ratios, the debt to equity ratio, the operating margin and the gross margin calculated from the income statement. Its really the trends that matter.
Reply:In order to accurately answer that question you need to determine your investment strategy. If you read about the well known investors (current and past) you will find that the statistics they used in stock selection vary. For instance some put a lot of value in p/e. Others completely ignore it.

I do not put too much faith in any particular statistic for buying stock. I tend to use them more to weed out stocks I'm not interested in buying.
Reply:Statistics aren't important at all. What is important is will the company grow in the future. That depends on their products, the market they operate in, and most importantly, the management team. Warren Buffet looks at those three things before he invests.

You should be fine. the fact that all your other grades are very high will be wonderful. besides, a college would rather see you struggle in an AP class than get all A's in a grade level course. with the rest of your grades you'll be fine. Where can I find vital statistics on the computer?
You may need to edit your post to give more information, such as what country and at least a general time frame. Also, for instance the US is such a huge country that the 50 States' information may be handled somewhat differently, especially over time.
Reply:If the person was old enough to maybe collect social security, you should check this site: http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cg... It will tell you the person's last residence was, the birth and death dates, etc. That will be a place to start looking. You could then go to www.usgenweb.com, pick the state, and the county. If you are lucky, someone may have posted local cemetery listings or have volunteered to do a lookup in the area.
Reply:LDS.org is a great place to begin. The Church of Latter Day Saints has Death, Census and marriage records along with place of burial on not just people born in the US but people born all over the world. You can also check at Ancestry.com.

You can sign up for a free membership andget 2 weeks free of both the US census/birth/death records and an additional 2 weeks of the world info. You can find birth and death records on both living and deceased individuals there, unlike LDS which only gives info on the deceased.

Reply:What information do you have? Try googling the name and it may come up with an obituaries or newspaper article. Post questions on querie boards where you think this person lived and under the persons last name. Someone may contact you with information. Look thru old obituaries of other relatives if you have any it may have this persons name and last location listed, so you may get a town or state to start from. Or you could go to a site where they locate people for you and pay them. Or if you have a phone number for this person it may still be in a phone book you could try a reverse search and enter the number and see if the name %26amp; location come up.

you could report of your countries current population comparing it ...

the present population from about 10 yrs ago's population.

tell them the difference and factors..etc..percentage chart can be made useful for a 15 min presentation.

hope that helps
Reply:You might try an experiment such as flipping a coin or throwing a die a large number times. Count the number of times the coin comes up heads or tails or how many times each number on the die comes up and then compare those numbers to the values predicted by the laws of probability.

If that is too abstract, develop a poll. Make up questions that can be answered yes or no, or which can be ranked on a scale such as 1 to 5. Ask a large number of students or other people these two questions and then make a correlation graph between the two answers. In your report you can discuss whether there is a high or low degree of correlation between the two sets of answers and whether or not that shows any relationship.

For instance you could ask 100 students to rate a certain rock band on a scale of 1 to 5 and then to rate their preference for a certain brand of running shoes also on a scale of 1 to 5. Graphing these scores can suggest whether or not shoe preference is related to musical taste.
Reply:There are millions of things you can do! You could design an attitude survey of 10 questions or so and hand it out to friends, family, or people at the local discount store. You could do a political attitudes survey -- what are people's opinions about George Bush? You could ask people about their daily exercise habits and then correlate that with how much time they actually spend exercising. You could find a personality questionnaire online and then have people fill that out and report back what you find. If you wanted to do observation, you could go to the playground and code kids' behaviour -- watch for two minute chunks and observe how many hits, how many laughs, how many arguments, or whatever behaviour you decided you were interested in. Maybe how much interaction between boys and girls at what age groups.

no.Steroids.
Reply:It's sort of unfair to compare pitchers across generations.. but statistically.. Roger Clemens is NOT in the top 5 pitchers of all-time.

In the last 50 years? Yes.. although NOT statistically.

Wins is a useless statistic in determing the value of a pitcher. If you disagree.. take a look at the 1910 season for Ed Walsh.. in which Ed was 18-20 with a 1.27 ERA. If you'd like a more recent season and one which involves the pitcher in question.. look at the 1990 Cy Young award and try and convince yourself Bob Welch had more dominating season than Roger Clemens.

2nd in Career Strikouts (4672)

Twice struck out 20 batters in a single 9-inning game.

These accolades are hard to match by any pitcher. Yes, he'll go down as one of the 5 best pitchers of all time.
Reply:there has been three pitchers since 1911 with 350 wins and he is one of them,,, spahn and maddux are the other two.. stats yes but big game gonads no.... the turn of the century pitchers with 400 wins or more had many more chances to win games than todays pitchers.. they didnt have to pitch 5 innings to qualify for a win either..some pitched two games in the same day..many many times.. what do you think that nolan ryan would of done against those broomsticks and handlebar moustaches?? pedro? johnson? koufax? gibson?

I rarely get to bed before 1 am and asleep by 2am so i have been living off of 4- 5 hours sleep a night sometimes not near that much. Statistics question: need help on how to figure this out?

Statistics question: need help on how to figure this out?

The professor has determined that the scores in his course are distributed with a mean of 75 and a standard deviation of 5. He announces that the top 10% of the scores will earn a "A". What is the lowest score a student can receive and still get A?

Statistics question: need help on how to figure this out?
assuming that the test scores are normally distributed then the scores that are above 1.28155 standard units about the mean.

Let X the the test score

P[ X %26gt; x ] = 0.1

P[ Z %26gt; 1.28155 ] = 0.1 where Z is the standard normal

(x - 75) / 5 = 1.28155

x = 81.40775

so anyone with a score of 81.40775 will get an A

What are some maglev statistics compared to other trains?

Energy, costs, speed, etc.

Anything that can be used to make a chart/graph.

What are some maglev statistics compared to other trains?
Horribly expensive and hardly any faster than conventional high speed rail, such as France's TGV or Japan's bullet trains. for the money spent, a very poor investment.

The figures for Japans maglev (Linimo) was $100,000,000 per mile to build, compared to $1,500,00 per mile of conventional high speed rail.

In actual use the current record for Maglev is 361 MPH, and conventional high speed rail is about the same.

Proponents of Maglev keep saying better things are on the way but so far it has not been proven. The incredibly powerful magnetic fields associated with maglevs are suspected of causing some serious health problems.
Reply:Well speed wise there isn't much in it. The top speed for a Maglev is 581km/h and for Conventional trains the top speed is 574km/h (for the non metric thats less then 5mph difference - I can't remember the mph figures)

Maglev, does have a higher in-service speed of about 250mph, Conventional High speed rail on the Spanish network will shortly rise to 220mph when the new advanced signaling system goes live (currently the speed with the existing signaling is 186mph)

Maglev's biggest problem is that it needs all new lines. Presently the TGV routes into Paris finish a few miles out from the city centre, with trains running at reduced speed (~120mph) on 'classic' lines shared with normal trains. There isn't much of a time penalty as the trains would be braking anyway for the station. However, blasting a new alignment into the city at immense cost isn't worth the small time savings. (London was an exception, as the London suburban rail network is full to bursting with high frequency commuter trains it was worth the cost to build a new 150mph tunnel into the city centre)

Maglev would require new routes and stations to be driven through urban areas unless you want to build stations outside the city (Like France does with minor TGV stops with varying degrees of success)

How is association in statistics identified and demonstrated?

I need a clear understanding of this. Most of the stuff that I have read has been very vague.

How is association in statistics identified and demonstrated?
Association and be quantified with a correlation coefficient. Two common coefficients are pearson's (parametric - i.e. can assume a distribution) or spearman's (non-parametric).

Both of these correlation coefficients range from -1 to 1.

1 -%26gt; perfect direct relationship

-1 -%26gt; perfect inverse relationship

0 -%26gt; no association whatso ever.

All values inbetween have sort of a vague interpretation...so with a corelation coefficient you pretty much have to speak very generally about how strong an association really is....

As another analysis of association, you can TEST for association between 2 variables. If the p-value is small enough, typically %26lt;.05, you can say that the 2 variables are associated %26amp; it is statistically significant.

Note that association is not the same as causation. Just because 2 variables are associated doesn't mean that 1 variable directly causes the other.

I agree that it can be difficult to find a direct answer to a statistics question... so to answer your question directly, to quantify association I would look at:

1) correlation coefficients (quantifies association)

2) tests for association (determines if association is statistically significant).

Try posting your question on the UK link they can probably give you better answers of what sites to look up.

Where can I find statistics that tell me how many American households have cats?
Do a search on "Pet Ownership" and "households with cats". I did similar searches looking for dog ownership and found lots of info. Try "cat onwership" too. there is a lot out there, you just have to sift through it though.

Where can I find the statistics on how big of impact would it be without advertisement about cigarettes?

Thank you very much in advance

Where can I find the statistics on how big of impact would it be without advertisement about cigarettes?
I don't think that kind of information exists. Advertising in tobacco has been a part of our culture for so long that there has been no precedence set to base the statistics off.

You could always look at statistics for countries where tobacco advertising is illegal (if there are any) and compare their smoking statistics with ours.

A. II and III only

B. I, II, III, and IV

C. I, II, and III only

I+II="D"

III- doesn't matter

IV- yes they really work sometimes but not very included into planned labor-force.

Where can I find social statistics on human behaviors?

I am looking for statistics on everyday human behaviors. LIke how many times a week the average person showers, etc.

Where can I find social statistics on human behaviors?
Dear sir; please be advised that "Statistics" is a complex science that is categorize by formulas and mathematical functions. To understand how "Statistics" apply to Human Behavior you need to study Statistics for one year at college level. "Average" is a scientific term. A scientific process that uses mathematical formulas is used to describe "average." Look for Psychological and Sociological Journals at University Libraries.
Reply:Type in Human Behaviors, Human Patterns, etc

Also, you can get books at the Library, talk with a Psychologist at any University, etc

this was a question that was asked 4 months ago.
Reply:The Merk Manual, written for medical doctors, has all kind of information; average number of times that men and women pass gas, burp, etc.

The DSM-IV, TR for psychology lists a lot of demographic information on who may develop disorders (% of males, females, age, etc.)

Good luck!!

Do you think that the constant emphasis on false rape statistics has any impact on your perception of rape?

In keeping with the current theme, I'm interested in knowing whether the current "battle" over the legitimacy of sources/statistics is having any impact on your perception of rape.

Do you think that the constant emphasis on false rape statistics has any impact on your perception of rape?
Not at all. But I think that it makes me underscore how serious a crime it is has to be understood by everyone. And I mean everyone. People have to understand how serious it is in order to not do it. People have to understand how serious it is in order to not falsely accuse people of it, and to tell the authorities when they are indeed victimized by it. And the police and the courts have to understand how serious it is to perform their due diligence in investigating it.

If people took it more seriously, there would be fewer rapes, more of those that do happen would be reported, fewer reported rapes would be false, and more of those reports would lead to a conviction.
Reply:None whatsoever.

I will underscore a previous answer: rape is a horrible crime.

When a person is falsely accused of a horrible crime, this is also horrible, especially if the person is found guilty and punished.

Both can be included as a form of theft, whereby so much, both tangible and intangible, is stolen from the victim.
Reply:I guess the percentage of such cases is very small and can never reduce the attitude towards the horrifying crime of such kind. It does not affect my perception.
Reply:As long as you have feminist laws that allow for false allegations to be taken seriously and no punishment for those that are found out, you will always degrade the women who are really raped
Reply:Hi Telcee.... I think that rape happens not only in your country but in every part of the world. Women do suffer the most.

Have a great Christmas..... Hope you comment on my previous question.

Reply:Good morning/night Teeleecee :-)

Not at all, statistics are relative nevertheless, and what is very sad is that many, never report a rape crime. For example, the surveys are based on testimonies of women over 12 years old. I read in an article (please don't ask me for a source, I just woke up), that 1/4th are younger :-( and that some documentation in the USA is conducted by phone. But, what about the women that are poorer where there is a highest rape rate and have no phone?

Also many rape victims are so ashamed or scared that never report it. In many third world countries the rape victims are higher and still less reported as there is a taboo stigma around it. We have known by the media of some brave women that have gone to the authorities just to be killed for this by their rapists or even their families to protect their "honour".

Rape statistics are always inaccurate, it is worse than what is presented to us about women, men and children :-(

It is a horrible crime
Reply:No impact whatsoever. Rape is Rape!
Reply:Absolutely not. There is always a certain amount of bad, a certain amount of lies in anything. You can't let such things take the focuss off the real issue at hand.
Reply:umm, Actually no,some people actually worsen it, u know, you know why smokers continue to smoke, because they are shown statistics, dt doesn't change anything, tdey believe stats are lies
Reply:Battling over numbers and statistics is just a way to move the argument from the relevant to the irrelevant. Is anyone going to argue that rape should not be condemned? I probably shouldn't even ask, because no doubt someone will endorse that notion. But whether it is the rape of a woman, man, or child, it is still a horrible crime. And whether it happens a million times a day or twice a day, it is still a horrible crime. The problem with assuming these polarized positions is that you fail to realize that 99% of life is in the gray area, not the black or white. Those living in the black and white world where the real issue is whether or not we have accurate statistics about rape are deluding themselves.
Reply:RAPE is a horrible crime and rapists don't get cured they rape till they are caught. i have a fool proof way of curing them KILL THEM
Reply:nah, rape is rape. Its bad alright.
Reply:No they are a mood point, it doesnt change anything for the ones invovled if 10 or 100 other girls have been raped. What is troublesome is the high number of FALSE accusations and the fact that too many women are impartial of these although they harm real rape victims.
Reply:No. Rape is a horrible crime.
Reply:No, rape is a horrible crime just like any crime with the intent to hurt somebody.

Anyway, what bugs me is some feminists who claim rape is a largely underreported crime. Yes, it is true; some women do not report it, but some also lie about it so they would negate each other out. They believe in the ''1/4 women are raped'' but not the ''1/4 men are innocent.''

The F.B.I. has found out that the rate of rape (for 2004) is at 4.9% [1]. A far cry from 25% commonly claimed by feminists. Even with those that do not report it, I don't think it would be much higher than 8% (which is already a lot).
Reply:Rape is RAPE. You can't do it 'accidentally'. The pig has a choice of what he is doing. Not only is it a nefarious crime, but it is extremely selfish! I mean, Think of these women and how much of an impact that something like this has on them after it's been done! They could get contracted some kind of life threatening illness, develop severe depression and contemplate suicide...So many other things too! It's wrong. Period.
Reply:No. Rape is a sickening crime and false statistics undermine efforts to deal with rape effectively. Either under-reporting (by women who think they won't be believed) or over-reporting (by feminists who expand the definition of rape) is a real problem. Re the latter:

"[t]oday’s definition of date or acquaintance rape stretches beyond acts of violence or physical force. According to common definitions of date rape, even verbal coercion or manipulation constitutes rape” (Roiphe, 1993, pp. 66–67) and “with such a sweeping definition of rape, I wonder how many people there are, male or female, who haven’t been date-raped at one point or another. People pressure and manipulate and cajole each other into all sorts of things all the time” (Roiphe, 1993, p. 79).

'Linguistic inflation' of terms like 'rape' and 'sexual abuse' only the muddies the waters of these serious issues. It is sick of feminists to use victims of crime as a pawn in their political game. The bottom line is that statistical distortion in no way helps victims of these serious crimes (e.g. they might not be taken seriously) and does nothing to help put real rapists in jail (e.g. resources are wasted by focusing on lesser offenses).

Edit

Its important to distinguish between perceptions of rape and perceptions of statistics about rape. Tragically the two can be very different and are far too easily confused.
Reply:Rape is a horrible crime and would always remain horrible as long as it exist. It is true that some women falsely claim rape on men resulting in a bad name put on women who are actually raped. The false rape statistics has no profound impact on me and spoils my perception of rape.
Reply:Rape statistics are always false- they are always under reported, specially when it involves a family member. So any statistics anyone produces is usually only the tip of the iceberg. Are you meaning perception in terms of numbers or perception in terms of the crime itself.Whatever the stats the crime is horrensous and that does not change
Reply:Not trying to be rude but..

Women nowadays scream rape far too often for me to take them seriously.
Reply:If you don't want to be raped don't hang out with non-whites.

The contrasts are even more stark in the case of interracial rape. Studies from the late 1950s showed that the vast majority of rapes were same-race offenses. Research in Philadelphia carried out in 1958 and 1960 indicated that of all rapes, only 3.2 percent were black-on-white assaults and 3.6 percent were white-on-black. Since that time, the proportion of black-on-white rapes has soared. In a 1974 study in Denver, 40 percent of all rapes were of whites by blacks, and not one case of white-on-black rape was found. In general, through the 1970s, black-on-white rape was at least ten times more common that white-on-black rape. [319]

Because interracial rape is now overwhelmingly black on white, it has become difficult to do research on it or to find relevant statistics. The FBI keeps very detailed national records on crime, but the way it presents rape data obscures the racial element rather than clarifies it. Dr. William Wilbanks, a criminologist at Florida International University, had to sift carefully through the data to find that in 1988 there were 9,406 cases of black-on-white rape and fewer than ten cases of white-on-black rape. [320] Another researcher concludes that in 1989, blacks were three or four times more likely to commit rape than whites, and that black men raped white women thirty times as often as white men raped black women. [321]

Interracial crime figures are even worse than they sound. Since there are more than six times as many whites as blacks in America, it means that any given black person is vastly more likely to commit a crime against a white than vice versa.

Reply:I prefer to se rape statistics through the media. Allow me to elaborate: here, a rape new comes every 10 days. Lets assume that it represents 20% of rapes (because blah blah blah unreported blah blah, and because the media puts enphasis in this kind of stories) so, every 2 days, a woman is raped in a 10 million people population (a cluster of cities). See?
