Where can I get information and statistics on land degaradation in India ?
Well.....I can give you sum info about land degradation and some statistics....

90% of our basic food ,shelter and clothing are obtained from land.Human activities have not only brought about degradation of land but have also aggravated the pace of natural forces to cause land damage.

At present there are about 130 million hectares of degraded land in India .Approximately,

28% -forest degraded area

56%-water eroded area

rest-saline and alkaline deposits

Some human activities such as deforestation, over grazing, mining and quarrying too have contributed significantly.

Wastelands in 2000 in India

here you can make a piechart too

10%-water eroded area

28%-forest degraded area

6%-saline and alkaline land

10%-wind eroded area

In states like Jharkhand,Chattisgarh,Madhya pradesh, orrissa, deforestation due to mining has caused severe land degradation...In punjab,Haryana, wset uttar pradesh, over irrigation is responsible for land degradation due to water loging leading to salinity and alkalinity in the soil.Mineral processing like grinding of limestone for cement industry, calcite and soapstone for ceramic industry.......

Afforestation and proper management of grazing ,,,planting of shelter belts of plants, control on overgrazing, stabilisation of sand dunes by growing thorny bushes....proper management of wastelands, control of minig, proper discharge and disposal of industrial efluents and waste after treatment can reduce land degradation in industrial and suburban areas.

Hope this helps :-)
