It has been seven years since I was in a Master's program, and now I'm preparing to enter a Ph.D. program. Since I haven't used the information learned previously related to research and statistics, I have forgotten quite a lot. Is there a good book out there that would be a gentle refresher but provide me with the most important details of these subjects? I'm especially interested in one that focuses on the social sciences. Thanks!
What is the best book to learn about academic research and statistics?
My personal favorite is "Research Design and Statistical Analysis" by Jerome L. Myers and Arnold D. Well (2002, LEA). Both are very respected psychologists and statisticians, and both care a great deal about students truly mastering statistics as a discipline. They are both retired now. Of course, I might be biased - I studied with them at UMASS. There is also a great book put out by Sage Publications called, "Statistics for People Who Think They Hate Statistics" (Salkind, 2003). It's highly entertaining! Salkind also published a version in 2006 for excel users (rather than SPSS). Best of luck to you!
